Dialogue
First Dialogue
Justis Clagg: Oi. What's your poison?
Justis Clagg: Back so soon?
Player:
1. What do you have to drink?
2. What's the story with this bar?
Justis Clagg: You want to know about the upper level or lower?
Player:
1. Tell me about the lower level.
Justis Clagg: This is my level. Where regular lads come to tip their elbow among kindred spirits. We make no pretenses down here on the lower level.
2. Tell me about the upper level.
Justis Clagg: That is Lord Chim's domain. It is a realm apart, not meant for us poor wretches of the lower orders to dwell in.
Player:
1. Lord Chim?
Justis Clagg: Alastair Christian Chim or 'Lord' Chim, as me and the lads call him. Master of the upper level and supreme pain in my arse.
2. A realm apart?
Justis Clagg: As in, we are not of sufficient rank in the social order to breathe that rarified air.
3. Who are you?
Justis Clagg: Color Sergeant Justis Clagg, retired, at your service.
Player:
1. Is Color Sergeant a special rank?
Justis Clagg: Indeed, it is. Not every military formation has Color Sergeants. The Harks don't, and neither do the Sardaukar. But in House Atreides, the Duke's Colors are sacred. No banner bearing the Atreides Hawk has touched the ground in more than five centuries. And it is the Color Sergeant's inviolate duty to ensure it never does.
2. Thank you for your service.
Justis Clagg: No worries, as long as you remember that gratitude when it comes time for the gratuity. But, while we're on the subject of gratitude. Why not make a donation to our Happy lad fund? Every Friday, we draw a House Trooper's name from a hat and make that Troooper 'happy.'
Player: What does 'happy' mean?
Justis Clagg: It means for the evening, his or her food and drinks are paid for. Wouldn't that make you happy?
Player:
1. Why can't they just pay for their own food and drinks?
2. Not as happy as not buying drinks for strangers.
3. I guess I'd be happy after a bunch of free drinks.
Justis Clagg:
[1][2][3] Mate, war comes with sacrifice. We are waging an ancient battle against a foe with nearly unlimited resources. Our beloved Duke may not claim the vulgar riches our enemy does but he is rich in honor, integrity, and moral certitude. It is those virtues that nourish our spirits even if financial recompense is delayed. We will get ours when the battle is won.
Player: Wait, you are not being paid?
Justis Clagg: We love our Duke. Love him. Like a father to us all. To a man, we would die for him. If we are asked to forgo our wages to help the war effort, it is an easy sacrifice to make. History must know that righteousness won the day.
Player:
1. Have you been officially asked to forgo pay?
Justis Clagg: Not offically, no. The Duke would never. That is why we, his true sons, forgo our draw on a voluntary basis.
2. What if people want money instead of righteousness?
Justis Clagg: There are many of them--more than I care to acknowledge. Small minds with even smaller imaginations. They cannot comprehend a universe where goodness is the most valuable currency.
Player: You can't buy food and drink with goodness.
Justis Clagg: But you don't have to if you are the happy lad.
3. You're retired?
Justis Clagg: Medically retired is what they call it. Turns out they like you to have legs in the House Guard.
Player: But you have legs.
Justis Clagg: Not as my mother made them. Those I lost at the Battle of Arrakeen. These are a gift from the Duke by way of Dr. Yueh and his cybernetics team.
Player: What happened to you at the Battle of Arrakeen?
Justis Clagg: When the Harks first came for us on that blackest of nights. They thought their treachery had won the day--before the first drop of blood was even spilled. But we were waiting for them--dug in like a tick behind a slig's ear.
Player: What happened?
Justis Clagg: Gotta give it to the Harks; when they saw their gambit failed and the House Shields were up, they coulda turned tail. Probably should have. But that ain't like the Harks. No, they doubled down instead. That first siege lasted one hundred and sixty-nine hours. One hour longer than a week. By the time that last hour came, my six-man Color Guard was down to me and five bodies. My CHOAM Regency Pattern side sword in one hand and the Atreides colors in the other.
Player: And then?!
Justis Clagg: I held my position, and the Atreides colors never touched the ground. Even after the detached tail section of a dying ornithopter crushed me from above.
4. Have you killed many Harkonnens?
Justis Clagg: As many as I bloody well can. I've shot 'em, stabbed 'em, bludgeoned them, blown them up. I've killed so many my belt fell apart from the notches. I'd kill them all if I could, and the universe would be a better place for it.
5. I'd like to talk about something else.
4. Goodbye.
