The Sleeper is a mysterious character, sought after by many great powers of the Landsraad from the Schools of the Imperium to the reclusive Fremen. Who this person truly is and why they must be 'Awakened' is the primary narrative objective of Book One of the game story.

Book One

The gameplay begins with a conversation with the Reverend Mother giving the player the mission, as a Bene Gesserit agent, to "Find the Fremen. Wake The Sleeper" before being dispatched to Arrakis.

The player is given no further instruction on who The Sleeper is, how to awaken them or why the Bene Gesserit want this task performed. But nonetheless the player proceeds through In the Footsteps of the Fremen to seek him out.

Act 1 Revelations

After completing the Trials of Aql, and in the final room of Sietch Ta'lab, a hologram recording left by The Sleepr plays. He reveals he was given the same two objectives by the Reverend Mother but seems to have uncovered a grand conspiracy at the heart of the Imperium - for which the Sardaukar were chasing him. They leave an encoded Ixian device in a safe, stating that once again "our" blood is the key.

Act 2 Revelations

At the end of The Assassin's Handbook, it is revealed that the Reverend Mother was in fact a Tleilaxu Facedancer, and not associated with the Bene Gesserit. The player is revealed to be a Ghola and 'The Voice' she uses is actually embedding a compulsion via hypno-ligation. She is killed by Zantara in the labs beneath Carthag, revealing her true form. This implies that the Bene Tleilax are truly the faction which wants The Sleeper, and that he too is potentially a Ghola. But of whom and with what purpose is not yet clear.

Act 5 Revelations

During Act 5, The Player finds the corpse of Cammar Pilru on Zanovar, and is confronted by Count Fenring. He remarks it odd that the player has seemingly no reaction to seeing a statue of Tyros Reffa nor hearing his name, as it is revealed that the player is part of the sixth generation of Ghola grown from his corpse.

They are taken to the Sardaukar Prison Ship where Scytale, the Facedancer that has been stalking the player for several acts, reveals that The Sleeper is the last surviving member of the fourth generation of ghola grown from Tyros' corpse, and the last one to bear his natural appearance. It is revealed that The Sleeper fled the destruction of Old Carthag and into the desert, where he found the Fremen and won their devotion - given he possesses all the genetic heritage and noble bloodline grooming from the Bene Gesserit, and their Missionaria Protectiva has led them to believe he is the Kwisatz Haderach

On the prison ship, The Sleeper is in a comatose state after ingesting the Water of Life before his capture. Scytale tells the player that allowing him to inhale more of the worm's poison would Awaken him. The Bene Tleilax primarily want to control The Sleeper as both a Kwisatz Haderach and a potential legal standing as heir to the Golden Lion Throne.

The Awakening is successful. After coming to and saving the player from Fenring, The Sleeper kills Scytale, knowing the Tleilaxu plan and not wanting to be their pawn. He helps the player escape via escape shuttle, destroying the Sardaukar prison ship in the process. He elects to stay on board the exploding ship, telling the player to find the Fremen and warn them not to rely on heroes. The Sleeper's sacrifice foils the Tleilaxu plans for Tyros Reffa, and leaves the player as the sole surviving ghola of their experiments.
