Dialogue

Alastair Christian Chim: Welcome to the Matador Room. I am your host, Master Chim. The Arrakeen jurisdiction ends at the top of the stairs. Beyond that line, there is only one rule: mine. Behave, and have a good time. Misbehave, and I ring the bell twice. The first bell summons Ugo; the second calls a stretcher. Now, what are you having?
Player: What do you mean, "the Arrakeen jurisdiction ends?"
Alastair Christian Chim: It means the Matador Room is my sovereign ground. I hold sway here. Even the Duke respects that arrangement. It was a condition of my employment.

Alastair Christian Chim: Welcome back.
Player:

1. I'd like a drink.

2. Who is Ugo?
Alastair Christian Chim: Ugo Firenze. Our resident doorman and wine steward.
Player:

1. A wine steward? That doesn't sound very scary.
Alastair Christian Chim: Many have tested that theory, and every time they do, I add to a small chest that I keep below the counter.
Player: You add what?
Alastair Christian Chim: Teeth.
Player: Okay, that's scary.
Alastair Christian Chim: That's not the scary part--the first hundred teeth in the box are Sardaukar.

2. A wine steward and a doorman? There must be a story there.
Alastair Christian Chim: Everyone has a story on Arrakis. Tis a crooked road that winds here. Gurney Halleck wrote a song about it.

3. Do people misbehave regularly?
Alastair Christian Chim: Unlike Sergeant Clagg's plebian realm below, beer-fuelled bonnybrooks are not considered a high form of entertainment in the Matador Room. We have my acerbic wit for that.
Player: You and Sergeant Clagg don't get along.
Alastair Christian Chim: UNo, the Harkonnen and Atreides don't get along. Sergeant Clagg and I share a much deeper antipathy. A fundamental difference in philosophy on how this war should be prosecuted.
Player:

1. Is House Atreides losing the war?
Alastair Christian Chim: Keep it down, friend. That kind of talk will get you hoisted from the rafters here. And as for whether we are losing the war or not, we're certainly not winning it. And neither are the Harkonnen, for that matter. At its highest level, war is about economics. Which side has the biggest war chest--and the Harkonnen win that hands down.
Player: Then why aren't the Harkonnen winning?
Alastair Christian Chim: Because they can't get out of their own way and continue to undermine themselves. By my calculations, had the Baron abandoned the Neo Carthag project and simply invested all the wasted Solaris on their war effort. House Harkonnen would have won the war in eighteen months.

2. How do you think the war should be fought?
Alastair Christian Chim: I think it's time to recognize that we're in a back-alley knife fight and not a skirmish on the field of honor.

3. How does Sergeant Clagg think the war should be fought?
Alastair Christian Chim: Sergeant Clagg is under the mistaken belief that we are fighting a noble and just war. In his eyes, it can all be reduced to black and white. The Great Convention describes the rules of engagement for a War of Assassins. These rules are known as the Forms of Kanly, An impossibly labyrinthine list of military do's and do-nots, Each and every point meticulously negotiated. The Forms must be obeyed. Until they must not. And that is where Sergeant Clagg and I fall out. I believe that the time to disregard the Forms has come, and the good Sergeant is fundamentally and violently convinced it has not, nor will it ever.
Player: Tell me more about Kanly.
Alastair Christian Chim: The Forms of Kanly were authored to resolve violent disputes while minimizing collateral damage. But it only works if everyone plays by the rules.
Player: Do the Harkonnen play by the rules?
Alastair Christian Chim: The Harkonnen understand the rules implicitly. On Arrakis, there are no rules but one. The spice must flow.

4. Goodbye.

3. Why is it called the Matador Room?
Alastair Christian Chim: It is tradition for the male heirs of House Atreides to train and master the corrida de toros, an ancient sport known as bullfighting. A violent contest between men known as matadors and six hundred kilos of raging bull. The old Duke, Paulus Atreides, was the last to pursue the sport, and he was a master! Regrettably, Duke Paulus lost his life in the bullring. Doubtless, the only way he'd want to go, but still, the young Duke lost his taste for the sport. This establishment is a shrine to his memory.
Player: Goodbye.

4. Goodbye.
