Purpose / Ethos

From Shadow, Dominion.

House Velryn exists to exert subtle influence across planetary systems, believing that true power is gained not through open conquest, but through information, leverage, and careful manipulation of events. They operate like a political mirage: present, but never fully grasped. Their ethos emphasizes adaptability, perception, and survival, especially in chaotic environments.

They prize discretion over valor, efficacy over spectacle, and see secrets as currency. Velryn agents are trained to anticipate shifts in power like desert tribes reading the wind.

Ranks/Hierarchy

The Veil (Leader / Strategos) The enigmatic head of House Velryn. Their identity is officially unknown. Communication is done via coded missives, interpreted by inner-circle advisers.

The Unfolded (High Council) A group of five trusted house elders who manage various arms: Espionage, Trade, Dataflow, Diplomacy, and Inner Security.

Inkblades (Senior Agents / Assassins / Diplomats) Highly trained operatives used for both infiltration and diplomacy. Often gifted in multiple disciplines—combat, language, and subtle manipulation.

Cinders (Acolytes-in-training) Recruits and initiates undergoing “The Sanding.” Not all survive or emerge whole.

Ashbound (Support Ranks / Logistics & Information Corps) Operatives embedded in spice convoys, CHOAM outposts, or other noble courts. Their job is to gather and feed intelligence upward.

Leadership

The Veil is the unseen ruler of House Velryn. Some believe “The Veil” is a title passed down to ensure psychological continuity—others claim it’s a single individual who has extended their life using illegal or forgotten means.

The Veil’s orders are interpreted and enacted by the Unfolded, a rotating council whose members swear an oath of identity erasure outside the House—none are known by real name in public.

Guild Lore

Founded during the post-Butlerian Jihad resettlement wave, Velryn was initially a desert-bound collective of archivists and ex-sorcerers who preserved dangerous philosophies deemed too “unsteady” by larger houses. Over time, they became master handlers of knowledge, often hired to retrieve, hide, or distort information on behalf of other houses.

They see themselves as guardians of unspoken truths and believe in preparing for the Age of Collapse—a prophesied breakdown of centralized imperial power. House Velryn has quietly positioned itself to endure when that time comes.

They maintain Threnhold, a data-vault moon orbiting a spice-poor planet that serves as their covert sanctuary.

Known Allegiances or Rivalries

House Moritani: Bitter ideological enemies. Moritani glorifies open assassination and brutality—Velryn views this as amateurish and inelegant.

House Harkonnen: Publicly neutral, privately adversarial. Velryn has historically exposed Harkonnen operations using anonymous leaks to CHOAM auditors.

Bene Gesserit (Tense Relationship): Mutual suspicion; Velryn views them as overreaching manipulators, while the Sisterhood sees Velryn as an unpredictable rogue element with dangerous insights into memetic influence.
